For IELTS fighters, it is likely that you are familiar with the types of
questions in IELTS Writing Task 1. If you are asked with the following
questions.
The graph below shows the unemployment rates in the US and Japan between March 1993 and March 1999.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Simply put, for the introduction, you have to write two things:
1. A sentence that describes what the graphical information is showing, and;
2. A sentence that illustrates the prominent pattern of the graphic information.
However, there are a few things you should pay attention to, including:
- DO NOT plagiarize the question/prompt, that is, paraphrase the prompt given. Make up your own words. So, if you look at the sample questions above, try not to write:
The graph below shows the unemployment rates in the US and Japan between March 1993 and March 1999.
Paraphrasing the sentence becomes:
The graph below depicts the rate of joblessness in the US and Japan from March 1993 to March 1999.
Then, what stands out from the diagram? This is the part where you have to be more careful to see the main pattern of the chart.
By looking at the graph above, you can see that in Japan, unemployment
increased, while in America, unemployment decreased. So you can write:
Overall, it is noticeable that the percentage of jobless people in Japan increased, while in the US it decreased.
You just need to change some words to synonyms of them as they are written in bold.
Another way you can paraphrase is to make a sentence with a subject and a predicate to begin with. Example:
The graph reveals the percentage of people who were jobless in Japan and the US from March 1993 to March 1999.
While simple and short, the overview sets the tone for your report as a
whole. So, always be careful and don't forget to re-read the overview
after you've written it to make sure it's correct.
